Coinbase have launched a new service named Coinbase Commerce. It allows website owners to accept crypto payments and donations by easily integrating Purchase and Donation buttons into their webpages. Website owners can accept payments in any of the four digital currencies currently supported on Coinbase—Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum and Litecoin.
This quick tutorial will show you the process of setting up an account and adding your first donation button to your website.
Step 1 – Setup Your Account
The first step is to sign-up for a new account. Existing Coinbase consumer account logins do not work here—you need to create a new account. Click the Sign-Up button and enter your email, followed by a strong password.
Once submitted, you will need to activate your account by clicking a link in the verification email sent from Coinbase Commerce. After you verify the account, you will taken to your Dashboard and immediately be prompted to complete some security settings.
The first step is to secure your account with two-factor authentication. Click the arrow to begin the process. You will be shown a QR code that you can use to add the account to your Google Authenticator app on your phone.
After clicking Confirm, you will be back at the Getting Started screen, and the next step is to secure your funds. Again, click the blue arrow to begin the process. This involves two steps. First, generate your recovery phrase, then verify your recovery phrase. Click Next to start the process.
You will now be shown a warning screen which you must acknowledge, by checking the box provided, before you can continue.
Once you acknowledge the importance of the recovery phrase, click Next to reveal your unique recovery phrase. Make sure you record it somewhere safe, by either writing it down, or using a secure password manager app.
When you are sure you have the phrase securely recorded, click Next. This will show a Disclaimer from Coinbase Commerce stating that they are not responsible for lost recovery phrases, and cannot access your funds in the event of you losing your recovery phrase.
You must acknowledge this Disclaimer by checking the box provided. Click Next to continue. Now you will be asked to verify the recover phrase by typing the words into the box shown below.
Note that pasting is disabled in this box, so you will need to type out the phrase in full. When complete, click Verify.
Now that you have successfully secured your account and verified your recovery phrase. You should now see your Dashboard, as shown below.
The Dashboard consists of three main blocks of information.
Your overall Balances in each cryptoasset account.
A summary list of recently completed Payments.
A summary list of your active Checkouts—’Purchase’ or ‘Donation’ buttons.
You can click on the individual headings in the sidebar navigation to go directly to each corresponding page for more in-depth information and options.
Step 2 – Create A Crypto Payments Button
Now that you have your account setup and ready to go, you’ll want start accepting crypto payments by creating a new Payment or Donation button. First, you will need to whitelist your website where the button will be used. Click Settings on the left hand side, then scroll down to Whitelisted domains and click Whitelist a domain.
Add your domain, including the https:// part, and then click Save.
Now, click the blue Accept payments button in the bottom left of the Dashboard screen.
You will be prompted to choose what type of crypto payments you want to receive. You can choose between creating a ‘product’ button or a ‘donation’ button. Click your preference to continue. In this tutorial we want to create a donation button, so we will click Accept Donations.
First enter the Organization name, followed by a Brief description and then click Upload organization logo to add your branding. The description box holds up to 80 characters. When you are ready, click Next.
On the following screen you can select what information, if any, you would like to collect from the individual making the donation. Check the boxes you require, then click Next.
The final step is to choose your method of implementation. Choose Link to use a direct URL which will send users to a hosted payment page on the Coinbase Commerce website, or choose Embed to copy the code required to place a pop-up on your website. Finally, click Done when ready.
